Interviews

DECEMBER 2009

RP Interview with ‘Joy Magazine’:

“Women Swamp Me.”

The man with the magic stare is and will be Hollywood’s hottest vampire. Robert Pat tin son sat down with JOY author Frances Schoen berger and talked about the Twilight sequel, co-star Kristen Stewart — and his secret fears.

Robert Pat tin son slips through a hidden entry into the Four Sea sons Hotel in Bev erly Hills and greets me with a shy ‘hello’. Plaid shirt, black leather jacket and sport ing stub ble: the 6ft tall Brit seems more like a casual bohemian rather than the most wanted celebrity. I have the feeling he doesn’t like the spotlight on him self: His eyes keep wandering to the floor. However, it’s exactly that, his vulnerability and insecurity that sum up his incredible charisma.

JOY: When I met you last year you were still a new comer to this business. Despite your break through career you don’t seem to have changed. You still appear down-to-earth, showing up to an interview by your self. Do you pass on an entourage?

RP: Having lots of people surrounding me permanently makes me nervous. I don’t need an assistant or a mentor. The more people hover over you the more people will try to tell you what to do. I don’t care about their opinions most of the time (laughs). Although I should try not to be too self-deprecating when being interviewed and to not put myself down all the time because fans will probably think ‘It’s true, he IS an idiot.’ (laughs)

JOY: The first Twilight movie pitch forked you on the crest of the wave. How did your every day life change with all the fame?

RP: Most of the time I don’t even notice being a celebrity because I’m constantly working. We started shooting New Moon right after we finished Twilight and right now we are already working on Eclipse. On the set, it doesn’t matter if I’m famous or not. I get up at 5 in the morning and when I go home at night I’m so tired that I just want to sleep.

JOY: Which part of the fame don’t you like?

RP: It truly is bizarre, how the press keeps lunging at me and how much they find to say about me. That means that I can’t go out as much — I need to hide when needed or lay false trails. I mean, I don’t have issues with people chatting me up on the street but if there is a bunch of girls swamping me, things get out of hand.

JOY: Dakota Fanning, who plays the evil vampire girl Jane, explains the hype of the female fans as such: ‘Edward is the perfect man, he is hand some and has great hair.’ What do you think about that?

RP: If all that matters is being attractive and have great hair, those aren’t tough conditions, I’m not sure if I can live up to them though (laughs).

JOY: What’s the difference between you and Edward?

Edward Cullen

RP: I, too, have bad hair days (laughs).

JOY: What was it like to work with Kristen Stewart again? Did your relationship evolve even more after working on New Moon?

RP: I love working with some one that I really like. She’s been a great co-actor ever since we started shooting Twilight. Edward’s authenticity depends on her performance and vice versa. We challenge each other.

JOY: Would you say it’s easier to fall in love on a movie set?

RP: Of course we spend a huge amount of time together but that doesn’t mean I fall in love with all my co-stars. That would have meant starting a love affair with Javier Bel tran after shooting Little Ashes (laughs).

JOY: The female fans are all over the forbidden love between Bella and Edward. Do you think there is also a part, male fans can relate to?

RP: New Moon of all the movies provides the most excit ing plot: because Edward is so in love with Bella, he is going through permanent self-doubt, thinking he’s not good enough for her. That way he destroys the relationship. I think every man can relate to that because we can be pretty confused when being in love!

JOY: What does your family in England think about the Twilight hype?

RP: I don’t think they even notice it that much. The other day my mom called to tell me she liked the shirt I was wearing in a picture. Up to this point my parents have hardly been affected by the paparazzi. They are just really nice people, a story about them would be rather boring. When my sister visited me in LA the other day she was shocked about how many magazines had my picture on their covers.

JOY: When was the last time you visited England?

RP: Almost a year ago when i was finally off work for 3 days. After that I only saw my parents at the New Moon premier but we are planning to celebrate Christmas together!

JOY: Back in London you were the singer in a band called ‘Bad Girls’. Will there be any performances in the future?

RP: I am still writing songs and if I happen to have enough time it is a possibility. Singing used to be a hobby of mine but now there would be a lot of people listening, or even criticize me. That scares me!

JOY: What is your next project?

RP: Next year I will be in New Mexico, shooting a western movie called Unbound Captives, together with Hugh Jack man. This role will be so far off from the role of Edward, noone will be able to com pare them. My dad is really looking for ward to that movie. He is better with horses than with vampires (laughs).

‘Twilight Stars on the Rise’ – The Mirror

Twilight trio Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are the hottest stars around. They talk passion, muscles and dealing with fame…

cos twilight new moon image 1 94461079 InterviewsWe’ve waited a long time to see Twilight sequel New Moon, and now it’s here, we’re beside ourselves. More tortured love, more hunky men (some with their tops off) more pining, more thrills. And this time, we’ve got not one, but several heart-throbs to drool over. Because, in this film, it’s not all about Edward Cullen.

Jacob Black becomes a man (and a wolf) – he’s got a major role in the film, and as an added bonus, he’s got some rather attractive wolfie friends in tow. The film is even more emotional and high-drama than the first instalment, but that’s why we love it…

For the past month, the Twilighters have been jetting round the world to attend premieres and promote the film. So when we caught up with them, we asked them what questions they never wanted to answer again…
Robert:
What’s it like kissing Taylor Lautner.
Taylor: To growl. Fans actually ask me to growl for them, and I really don’t enjoy doing that. So, please don’t ask me to growl.
Kristen: You can ask me anything you want.

You can’t ask for a better start than that…

For Kristen, New Moon is a darker film than Twilight…
Kristen: This is a severely emotional movie. That’s the one big difference. This one isn’t about discovery or falling in love. Bella’s a manic depressive, basically… It was just heavier and it was more to think about.

How did you address the fact Robert’s not in the film as much as he was in Twilight, which might be disappointing to fans?
Kristen:
He’s in it a lot.
Robert: They won’t be disappointed either. Edward’s just a voice in the book, and so I guess it would look pretty cheesy if it were just my voice in the film, so they’ve done these hallucinations, that are semi-visible apparitions.
Kristen: It’s suggestive. It’s how she remembers him, not necessarily how he actually is.
Taylor: If he was absent, they would miss him very deeply.

What are your favourite scenes from the film?
Taylor: I have a lot… I like a lot of the cool action scenes I get to do, because I just had a lot of fun with those. My original favourite was the scene where I walk Bella up to her door and say goodbye to her. I’m going off to fight in the woods, and she’s worried. I thought that it was kind of cute, but I also like the break-up scene.
Kristen: Yeah, that’s my favourite… He basically tells her they can’t be friends any more, and he’s transforming. If Taylor ever, ever treated me like that, it would kill me.
Robert: I think my break-up scene was my favourite too. Hopefully, it’ll come off as having quite a few more levels than the relationship in Twilight… It’s quite an interesting little moment. It completely bypasses all the supernatural elements of the story as well.

Robert, did you enjoy filming New Moon?
Robert: I started shooting three weeks after everyone else and a lot of my first scenes were the apparition scenes. That was a lot of me doing, maybe, one word. It was one of the most relaxing jobs I’ve ever done. I had a stress-free three months. All the pressure was on Taylor.

When she’s not pining after Edward, Bella finds herself getting close to Jacob, whose transformation into bona fide hunk for the film has got us all hot under the collar. And lucky for us there are plenty of scenes which require him to take his top off…
Taylor: Yes, but there’s definitely reasons behind it for the film! When we transform, our clothes come off and afterwards we have to go find them. And we’re hot, we’re 108 degrees. So it’s not like we’re randomly taking our shirts off for no reason.

Perfectly good reasons, yes, we agree.

How have your personal lives changed since you were promoting the last film?
Robert:
I’d like to think that I haven’t changed that much. Within myself, I don’t think I’ve changed. I think I look down a lot more now. It’s kind of extraordinary. I don’t think any of us expected any of this to happen, and especially that the magnitude of this franchise seems to keep building. It’s an interesting thing to deal with.
Taylor: My schedule has gotten really, really busy, doing publicity and working on other things. It’s crazy. None of us saw it coming and, since last year, it’s definitely been a ride, for all of us.
Kristen: I cut my hair off!

But with all the paparazzi, how you do you manage to get anything normal done in your everyday life?
Robert: I never do anything normal anyway. I just get other people to do it now!

WHAT’S THE STORY?
Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) have their happiness cut short when he realises he must leave her in order to keep her safe. (Men, eh? We’ll never understand them.)

Bella is heartbroken and depressed but in the following months she becomes closer to Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), and also realises the risk and adrenaline that come with dangerous activities make Edward appear to her in hallucinations, so she becomes a thrill junkie.

Bella finds out Jacob is a werewolf, and he and his werewolf pack protect Bella from Laurent and Victoria, who want revenge for the death of evil James.

Meanwhile, crossed wires lead Edward to believe Bella is dead (Romeo and Juliet anyone?). Distraught, he goes to Italy to provoke the Volturi, powerful Vampire royalty, so they will kill him and end his misery (we could think of a few things that might be less drastic Eddie, they’d cheer you up).

Alice and Bella rush to Italy, saving Edward. But the Volturi warn that because Bella has found out about them, she must be turned into a vampire, so Edward says if she agrees to marry him, he will eventually turn her. Turn us! Turn us!

 Interviews

ROB & KRISTEN ON AGAIN – OFF AGAIN

First meeting:
The audition. Director Catherine Hardwicke said, ‘You could see they had this nervous attraction and this pull towards each other. You could see the chemistry, and Kristen was adamant, saying she wanted to work with Robert and that “he’s the one”.’

The film begins shooting in early 2008. Rob is overheard asking Kristen to marry him on-set. However, it seems he is just trying to stay in character.

When the first film is released in November 2008, rumours fly Rob and Kristen are dating. Pictures come out of them at a concert, apparently leaning in for a kiss.

In early April 2009, Robert denies anything is going on, calling rumours ‘ridiculous’ and ‘bizarre’.

At the end of April, more rumours leak out about an off-set romance, this time between Robert and Nikki Reed, who plays Rosalie.

In May 2009 a fan says she has spotted Robert and Kristen coming out of a bar at 2am kissing and holding hands.

In spring of 2009, Rob films Remember Me in New York and becomes friendly with co-star Lost’s Emilie de Ravin. This apparently makes Kristen – who had been ‘stringing Rob along’ – jealous. Nobody knows if she is still with boyf Michael Angarano.

In June, US magazines screamed ‘Yes! They’re in love’ claiming they’d been having romantic dinners in Italy, and they were ‘struggling to admit their true feelings’.

In August 2009 they were supposedly having intimate weekends. By now, Kristen has officially dumped her boyfriend.

Later the same month, it was reported they were now part of a love triangle, with Nikki Reed, but all Rob wanted was his ‘co-star’, meaning Kristen.

On 29 October, they spend the night together at LA’s Chateau Marmont.

Early November 2009, Rob/Kristen hysteria reaches fever pitch again as they are spotted hand in hand.

Late November 2009, Rob has apparently ‘moved on’ with publicist Erika Dutra.

Robert Pattinson:‘Girls scream at me all round the world. Once, I was so nervous, I started crying…’

For our interview, Robert was dressed in an old T-shirt, jeans and unlaced trainers. Throughout, he nervously ran his fingers through his gorgeous, floppy hair and revealed he doesn’t feel comfortable talking about himself – which was rather sweet…

Robert Pattinson

Is it difficult to master the American accent? Not really. All of my favourite actors are American and I grew up watching American movies. It’s weird, but I used to do a New Jersey accent in every audition in the States just because I liked to do it, really. It’s completely bizarre. Everybody would ask: ‘Where are you from?’ And I would say, ‘Oh, I’m from London.’

In the novels, Edward Cullen is described as gorgeous, do you see yourself as that?
Not really! I put off doing the audition for months because of that. I read the book and I thought, well, there’s no point in going in. I thought the whole point of the part was to give a purely physical performance. Like a modelling job. And I thought, I’m not going to go to the gym for one thing, so I’m already ruled out because he’s meant to have this amazing body too.

So did you get in shape for the role?
(Nods) I did go to the gym for the movie in the end. I didn’t just want to have a six-pack, I wanted to have no fat at all.

What superpowers would you like to have in real life?
I wouldn’t like to read minds. No way. If they’re not going to tell you what they’re thinking, then you wouldn’t want to know. I think I would like to have infinite wishes.

Are you friends with the guys from the Harry Potter films?
Well we were briefly, but not really now. We did stay in touch for a bit. The thing about Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) is he was so busy, like all the time, even when we were shooting, because he was still in school. I rarely had the chance to talk to him. He would have to run off to do schoolwork or something.

Do you remember the first time you felt famous?
Yes, it was terrifying! And it started months before Twilight even came out. The power of the internet. There was literally one day when it all changed. A few people had recognised me from Harry Potter, and then one day someone came up to me on the street in LA and asked: ‘Are you the guy from Twilight?’ And I had only been shooting for a week.

How do you feel about being recognised?
A lot of the time it’s really annoying, but, at the same time, I know for the jobs that I want to do, it’s extremely important to have that and to nurture it as well. Plus it really only happens in big cities where people just know stuff.

Where are you living these days?
I used to own a flat in Soho (London), but I am essentially a nomad. I sort of stay in LA for long periods for work.

How do you feel about the living out of a suitcase lifestyle?
I like that, because I don’t want to have any responsibilities. (Laughs) When I had my apartment in London I had a constant flow of bills. I couldn’t handle anything. I was completely falling apart! All I ate was takeaway pizza. Disgusting.

Do you feel like you’ve made it?
I don’t think you can ever feel that cocky. But I remember when I bought my flat in London’s Old Compton Street, I felt I had kinda made it. I remember sitting up on the roof terrace with this great view of London. I remember standing there with the keys in my hand thinking, this is kind of ridiculous. I have a place in Soho and I’m an actor!

Do you hang out with the fellow Brit actors when you’re in LA?
I’ve never found that British crowd. But I meet tons of British people all the time in LA. I hang out with a lot of musicians. People are so accommodating there. They are so much more willing to hang out with you, especially if you’re a stranger. I met someone the other day and I was like, do you want to hang out? And they’re like: ‘Yeah!’ I was like: ‘But what happens if I decide to kill you?’ They give you the benefit of the doubt so easily.

Do you ever get starstruck?
I just shot a film with Dennis Hopper where I had to have a massive emotional breakdown in this scene with him. I was very nervous about it. I can definitely claim to be an actor now. (Laughs)

Would you like to do a romantic comedy?
Yeah, but it has to be the right movie. I saw this movie the other day called Russian Dolls. It’s a romantic comedy for guys – it was strange seeing a romantic comedy set from a guy’s perspective. I’d like to do something like that.

Who would be your ideal leading lady? Who would you like to snog on camera?
To put it bluntly! It’s always risky when you mention someone. I don’t know any modern actresses at all. Although I’ve always liked Patricia Arquette. I liked her in True Romance which was about 15 years ago I know. But I haven’t seen her recently.

What makes you laugh about showbusiness?
My old agent used to promote me as the male Keira Knightley. (Laughs) I thought: ‘Well, what does that say about me exactly?’ Do I pout a lot or something?

Tell us a secret about yourself that we don’t know.
I always wanted to be a pianist. I’ve played the piano since I was five and I’ve always fancied the idea of playing in bars in the south of France. I think that would be the coolest job.

How are you coping with all your enthusiastic female fans?
I don’t know why but it still shocks me. I mean, when I was promoting Twilight I would visit different cities around the world where girls just screamed at me. Every single time, I would get so nervous, and I would kind of break out in cold sweats. Then one time, I started crying. It was in Italy and it was completely involuntarily.

You’ve been pictured holding hands with Kristen Stewart recently. Did you feel chemistry with her from the beginning?
Yeah, I definitely felt like there was some kind of, I don’t know, connection or something. I definitely had a reaction to her, which I really wasn’t expecting.

What makes Kristen a good co-star?
She doesn’t back down to people. And it was quite good working with her, because I don’t like backing down to people either. Like when you’re fighting with producers and when you want to do things a certain way, it’s good to have two leads that just – well, will back each other up.

When you landed the role in Twilight, did you automatically sign on for the next three movies?
Yeah, I’d signed on for all three. I’d read the books, and I knew my character wasn’t in it that much in the second one, and not in it as much for the third. I also knew I’d have to be 17 for the whole time, so I knew it couldn’t go on until I was, like, 30. That would look a little odd!

Twilight’s Robert Pattinson ‘really embarrassed’ by shirtless scene in New Moon

Robert Pattinson said his shirtless scene in Twilight sequel New Moon was “really embarrassing” to film as he feels like a wimp in comparison to co-star Taylor Lautner.

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen

Lautner packed on 30lbs to play Jacob Black in the film, which is released next week.

Pattinson, who stars as vampire Edward Cullen, said he was weedy by comparison and cringed when the director asked him to strip off.

“It’s really embarrassing, especially when Taylor has a fourteen-pack or something,he told Heat magazine.

Kristen Stewart, who plays heroine Bella Swan, said she was amazed by Lautner’s new look, whch he has achieved through intensive weight training.

She said: “He’s an entirely different person physically. It took him so much time. He’s so devoted. The cool thing, though, is that it’s not just physical. You can read it all over him, just in his attitude.

“The difference between the kid that did Twilight and the guy now is pretty astounding. He even did a lot of his own stunts. He catapulted himself into a window – that was really impressive.”

Twilight fans are divided into ‘Team Edward’ and ‘Team Jacob’ camps, and Lautner said his fanbase included a lot of older women.

“I’ve had women in their 40s come up to me and ask if I can sign their underwear. The moms are crazier than the daughters.”

Pattinson made his name as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter films and said he could take tips from Daniel Radcliffe on coping with the pressures of fame.

“I’d quite like to talk to him about it. He has a very good method for coping with ti all – well, from what I can see anyway. It seems like he stays completely grounded all the time.”

‘The Times’ Chat with Robert Pattinson
The Times, a publication in London, had sat down with Robert Pattinson while he was in Vancouver filming ‘Eclipse”. Check out the article below:
On a balmy autumn day in Vancouver, Canada, a young man is longing for a walk outside in the sunshine, and deciding against it. Far easier for him to stay in his hotel room, cocooned in five-star luxury, with a cellphone that has run out of charge, safe at least from the girls chanting his name outside.
Robert Pattinson, 23, from Barnes in southwest London, ought still to be one of Hollywood’s beautiful dreamers, moving up the ranks of movie acting, enjoying his American adventure, his guitar, his good looks. Instead he lives in danger of being trampled in a stampede of teen love. He plays the vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, the biggest books-to-screen phenomenon since Harry Potter – in which, by the way, Pattinson was Cedric Diggory, heroic golden boy and victim of Voldemort. Boy, his life has changed since Hogwarts.
In Canada, he is shooting Eclipse, the third of Stephenie Meyer’s quartet of novels. The second, New Moon, was released this month in a publicity extravaganza that involved shutting down New York’s Times Square. The last time the actor was there, the square was also closed to traffic, for an event only marginally more fascinating to the world: the election victory of Barack Obama. We talk on the phone. Even now, a year afterTwilight’s release, Pattinson sounds utterly stunned by the hysteria swirling around him.
“It’s been a little frightening,” he laughs, a sort of embarrassed chuckle, the sound of someone negotiating the best bit of luck they have ever had, not wanting to sound blasé or overexcited. “In England, no one had heard of the series when I went for the audition, so it has been a total, utter surprise. The change to my everyday life is so extreme. Before this, I was used to working 10 days a year. Originally, I did a three-picture deal, but I wasn’t even really thinking about that . I had no idea I’d still be working on it now.”
Does the poor boy, who still calls London home, feel he has to hide? “I tend to stay in the hotel because where I’m staying is publicised all the time. There’s always a bunch of people outside. I can’t really be in Los Angeles now at all. It’s not that the fans are threatening, but the paparazzi follow me all night.” This hounding can evoke an absurd sympathy, considering the kid’s fortune and prospects. But then he brightens, telling me he was buying a guitar the other day and had to spell his name 12 times, and the guy still didn’t twig. “I loved that.”
When he read the first script, he had no idea how to play it. “I thought Bella, the heroine, would be a damsel in distress and I’d have to be the alpha-male hero type, so I thought I was never going to get it. But then they cast Kristen Stewart and she’s not really like that, so I realised there was a different way to play Edward, to show his vulnerability.” Could he get trapped and find it hard to move on to different sorts of roles?
“It worries me, because the whole Twilight thing keeps getting bigger and bigger, and now it’s so big, even my own ego can’t cope with it. A certain amount of success you can mentally deal with, but there’s a point where you think: ‘Jesus Christ, what is this? I’m not that great!’ I just wanted to make an American film, and I wanted it to be relatively good and to be good in it. I have never pushed to do anything . As soon as you start going to the gym every day and try to look like a movie star, you’re going down a worrisome track.” He laughs. “Being an English guy, you get a lot more breaks. You’re allowed to look a little worse. It’s that thing about English teeth.”
To say New Moon is eagerly awaited is like saying the Pope could use a miracle. Moreover, it promises to be twice as hormonally charged as Twilight, since it offers two poster boys for the price of one.
Is Pattinson embarrassed to have millions of girls in love with him? “The only time it’s embarrassing is when you do a photo shoot and people try to force you to look clean-cut,” he says. “When they use pictures where you’re smiling sweetly and having your hair brushed, because that’s not what you want to be known for. I don’t really know why the girls love the movie so much. The series has become a bit of a cult. People like being part of the club. They’re obsessed.”
